The Paper Men

Artwork by Hannah Poulter

Granda's stories would capture my overactive imagination and plunge me into a surreal world of fantasy. One of my favourites and most vividly remembered was the tale of The Paper Men. It was a story I didn't hear often as Nan felt it would give me nightmares and she'd be right in her thinking. However, terrifying dreams or not I always took the opportunity when I could to hear the story; until that fateful night when I taunted the Paper Men myself. After that, I never asked for the tale again...

Update - My Scribbles

When we are in a place in our lives where we don't want to be  and fail to see any light at the other end, it's so easy to get caught in a trap of anxiety, depression and self loathing.

It's natural instinct to portray a miserable disposition when we feel just that.

It's such an instinct, in fact, that we rarely see that we have a choice in our feelings.

Choose your Mood

I am a complete romantic at heart and always believed our default feelings show the true us. We don't have control over our feelings, we don't get to decide how we feel. Feelings are just that. Or are they?

Do we not have some say in them?...

Find your Inner Peace

Allow some time every day to reflect upon yourself, your journey and your accomplishments, even if it's for only thirty seconds of your day. Take time to appreciate the precious moment you are experiencing at that present time. Be thankful for the wonderful people that you love and keep reaching for the stars. Your potential is boundless.

Update - My Scribblss

The Forgotten Generation

As my days pass to months and months pass to years, bitter resentment has been festering within. I can’t help but feel lost and forgotten by the world.

I can’t speak for my entire generation but from experience, this feeling is mutual among my peers; A generation of twenty and thirty somethings who feel hard-done-by and abandoned by the government. We are the future but what kind of future shall we live? I, like so much of my generation, hold a degree which I studied six hard years for. We are qualified, intelligent and competent; yet for large number of young people that didnt take the courageous step and emigrated, are mostly to be found either in severe debt, just scraping by or, as is my own case, still living with our parents.

Earning just €2 over minimum wage and on a 40 hour contract, I have reached my pay threshold. This threshold will be in place for the foreseeable future. I work an eight hour day and when I come home, I work on my art until I can’t focus anymore. I have entertained the thought in pursuing a career in art and entertainment, where my degree lies. Numerous attempts resulted in only costly failure. In order for me to travel to markets to sell my art around the country, I will need to first fork out upwards from €600 a year for insurance. I cannot realistically do that and make a significant profit while I am starting out my career.

Our national broadcaster rarely hires fresh, young creatives and grants from the art council are seriously lacking. If it’s too costly for me to start out on my own and if the national broadcaster isn’t hiring and the Irish Government isn’t providing sufficient support, then what is left for me? Am I destined to live, forever with my parents as a grown-up child?

By the time the tax man is done I average €350-€380 a week, certainly far removed from Enda Kenny’s estimate of an average income in this country of €30,000 a year and I am on the higher end of the payscale for the middle income bracket. I would love to know where he pulled those figures from.

I’ve had my medical card taken away and I am not entitled to a GP card. Having had to visit the doctor and a therapist very frequently since last year, I have been finding it extremely hard to pay for the visits as well as my medicine, bills and loans.

Spending my life with the man I love and raising a family with him is simply an impossibility. What is the point in living if you have no life of your own?

I long for freedom and independence. I long to support myself and raise a family. I long to contribute to society. I long, for something that generations before us took for granted, to be a fully functioning adult; another impossibility.

The government is doing nothing about unemployment but running scams and lying to make the figures look good. Jobsbridge has to be the most counterproductive scheme the government has yet rolled out. Employers benefit with free employment and the government benefits by getting numbers off of the live register, while the people being ‘hired’ earn a mesely €50 onto their dole. Not only is this demeaning and belittling but it is soul destroying. It drives you to madness knowing that you are stuck on a continuous loop consisting of menial, tedious work with no escape; having to spend a six month programme learning to stack shelves, only to be cast aside and discarded when the programme ends.

The government tells us employment is up as more jobs are being created. That’s excellent to hear but what about the quality of those jobs? Employers are taking full advantage of people’s desperation and passing out zero hour contracts. The rights of the employee are quickly fraying but the sad thing is that it just has become the accepted norm. Low hour contracts for low paying jobs is all that is on offer now.

I speak dire of my generations prospects, I can’t imagine the world we are going to leave to todays children. Jobsbridge will have a ripple effect on todays youth, Gone will be days of a summer job in the local supermarket. Those positions will be filled by another number of twenty somethings just trying to survive.

The same can be said for the sham courses that the government are putting people on, it’s all to fluff the stats.

I am ambitious, intelligent and hardworking, yet this has gotten me nowhere significant.

Butter Wouldn't melt

I just couldn't resist dressing up little Miley (after Glenroe's Miles Byrne) in this bonnet. It's his own fault for jumping into that pram.

Update - My Handywork

Now the Work Begins
After so much time, effort and energy, the first draft of my novel; The Ages of Dawn is complete! Now the work begins!

Since sitting down and finally penning my imagination last year, the story has only gone from strength to strength; as have I. I still find it hard to digest all that I have accomplished over, not just the last year, but since I started envisioning the fantastical and mystical world at the tender age of fifteen.

I would not have succeeded in this enjoyable, enlightening challenge without the loving support and encouragement of my wonderful family, my adoring boyfriend, my inspiring mentor and of course my outstanding therapist :)

Here is a quick piece I did, inspired by a dream sequence within the novel.

Update - My Scribbles

The Trough of Love

When I was 17, I suffered my first heartbreak. At the time, I thought the pain would never end. I couldn't be consoled and I spent a week and a half solid crying non stop. I cried until, in an act of desperation, I took to my pen and copybook. I flicked through my English school book until I found an exercise that spoke to me. I was sick of crying and wanted a distraction.

However, what I recieved was far more valuable than any distraction, I got liberation, relief and satisfaction. Half way through my tears were stopped and by the end I was smiling. The world was no longer ending, I was okay.

Relationships that make a world… and… the world torn like a circus: Write an article (serious or humorous) about the beginning and ending of a relationship.

Relationships can be very tricky. It takes two to make one, two to save one and one more to destroy it. Love can make the most vulnerable of us blind and the most manipulative of us thrive. However, we cannot function without human contact; as much as some of us would rather shut ourselves off.

Being in love can be one of the most elating experiences in life and becomes so much more wonderful when that love is reciprocated. The beginning of a relationship is the most exciting part. The first weeks are utter euphoria as concentration on anything that doesn’t concern your new love goes out the window. Whenever they cross your mind your heart races, you can’t seem to eat for fear of throwing up those butterflies you must have swallowed and you can’t sleep unless it is in their arms.

Then there’s the thrill of discovering all the little things that you have in common and the tricks you pull to make yourself believe those common interests truly matter; like the song you both like, or the favourite colour you share. You determine his quarks and what turns him on; while strolling hand in hand, you act as though you aren’t paying much attention to his rambles, while all the while; listening intently so you can surprise him with that bottle of cologne he wears.

Your first kiss is a moment you will always remember; be it while sitting on the beach on an August afternoon, as the sun warmly caresses your skin or while sitting on a bench on a bitter Christmas Eve, as the snow gently falls on you: This night was made for us.

The relationship continues on, both falling deeper in love, however as it is in many cases, one falls harder than the other.

The relationship changes, not for the better or worse, you still obsess over him, but grow more comfortable in the relationship; this is where you need to stop and think and ask yourself, “Should I keep opening up and risk being wounded or should I back off?” This is where you need to assess the reality of your relationship; however, where love is concerned, reality and logic rarely come into play. For a lot of us, self-denial or our imaginations lead us to believe that we are wanted and valued, when we are not appreciated for who we are. It can overwhelm and blind you to the harsh, cutting truth, it can make you believe that you have found “The One”; or perhaps it is his manipulative nature that makes us vulnerable. On the face of it, to the world he showers you with gifts and sweetness, while privately he eats away at your confidence with cruel jibes and offhand insults.

At this stage we become so consumed with passion and longing that we are blinded to the sharp cracks forming; inevitably making us the creators of our own destruction. Or perhaps, we are but an innocent bystander and it is the interference of a third party that is the cause of the unfaithful demise.

Whatever the factor involved, the ending of a relationship is soul retching when one person is still in love. It comes with the same intensity of emotion at the begining but replacing unrelenting euphoria with excruciating pain and suffering. The depression of a breakup can be so severe that you feel as though happiness is lost for eternity and you fall asleep at night, dreading the new day which will bring with it, the same old feelings of despair and hopelessness.

Of course, the great thing about technology is that instead of being a decent human being, you can hide away behind a handheld screen and shatter somebody’s heart and soul without the fuss of causing a hysterical scene. As much as technology has evolved though, sadly, the cheesy clichés still remain the same.
“I do love you but it’s changed.”
“It’s not you, it’s me”
And my favourite one when he is trying to put it off and string you along
“I need time to clear my head.”

Even though he crushed you to the brink of existence, you want him back so badly, you are willing to simply forget the lies, the abuses, the cheating; you are willing to throw away all self-dignity and beg and plead to take you back.

Perhaps those who shut themselves off for fear of getting hurt have it right? Is it truly better to have loved and lost, than never having loved at all? Is it really worth the risk of being wounded; being left lost, broken, hopeless and lonely? Though those who shut themselves out are often left feeling lonely, is it really better not to taste the sweet of fruit of love; at the risk of being poisoned?

Honestly, I would have preferred to not have been tempted by the fruit; I was tempted and I gave into unquestioningly. However I did learn some valuable lessons on human nature.

Despite knowing the searing pain I will endure from a broken heart; I, just as most of those around me, will throw caution to the wind and will gorge on as much fruit as possible.

Update - My Scribbles

Aoife's Goodbye

A granda's sorrow
A nanny's lament,
Time gone
And milestones missed,
Trying to savour the moments
That come far and in between,
Reaping the joy From the bitter sweet,

She whispered my name
And caught my hand,
Acceptance and love without question,
A miracle,
A gift,
She brightens our lives,
But now we must weep
While the sun is setting,

Though the sea may be wide,
And the waters deep,
Now has come time for goodbyes,
But tomorrow will dawn a new day,
And we will dry our eyes,
While your smile wakes the world,

 Farewell sweet girl.

Update - My Scribbles

Shadow Guardian

My brain is squeezed,
My jaw clenched tightly,
My neck is strained
Near choking,

The dull an poignant pain at every touch,
A reminder,
Of the self control lost,
A memory of why,

Self destructive and despised,
Suffocation and isolation,
Not the world against me
But me against the world,

I seep the light
The joy
The calm,
The bearer of my downfall,
The creator of my fortress,
The bringer of my darkness,
Guardian of my shadows.

Update - My Handywork

I am a straight up hoarder!

I hate throwing anything away that may come in useful some day.

This reigns true especially for anything shiny or sparkly. However, when my boxes and containers were almost overflowing, in the spirit of creating, I put together some not very chimey windchimes. They may not sing but at least they're pretty.

I used a selection of bangles, ribbons, beads I had broken off of unworn jewelry and some old Christmas decorations.

I'd encourage you all to look through your old trinkets, who knows what new treasures you will create!

Update - My Scribbles

Once again, you have arrived, full of zealous to engage in my wonderings. I won’t keep you too long this time; short and sweet, I promise. I appreciate your interest in the nattering of a broken man; it is very kind of you. Please make yourself comfortable and join me, as we dive once again, into my wonderings.

It's a Dog's Life

It says a lot about the morals and values of society when an eleven grand reward is offered up for information regarding a tortured dog. It makes me think that priorities are somewhat askew here.

From one animal lover to another; it makes me sick to my stomach to think that somebody would be so twisted as to slit the throat of a family pet, however on the same weekend as this horrific incident; a man in his seventies was pulled from a car and beaten to within an inch of his life; his attacker got into a serious fit of road rage. Not many people had heard about this; never mind mustering the enthusiasm to catch the sick son of a bitch who flogged this poor man.

Let’s talk frankly about rape for a second; time and time again in this country women are forced to recount a horrific, violent attack in a courtroom. They are forced to come eye to eye with their attacker, wave their right anonymity, and for what? So their offender will get a five to seven year sentence, with two of those suspended? I didn’t see anybody offering up eleven grand for Elaine O’Hara or Rachael O’ Reilly’s killers.

It seems to me that we value the life of a tortured animal over the life of a violently violated woman or a beaten man. We seek justice and accountability for the poor little dog, where we seek, well nothing really, for the abused women and pulverised men.

I recognise the fact that the really sadistic psychos start off by torturing and killing animals; as such we should be taking this incident seriously. However is 11K not excessive? It is great that we are all outraged for this poor misfortunate dog but should we not start with more pressing crimes such as rape, murder, armed robbery, and work our way up to the eleven grand for animal mutilation? Should we not feel the same outrage and disgust for the poor seventy year old who was flayed to a pulp or for the thousands of women that have been raped and abused?

Personally, I’d rather priorities human life over that of an animal. I don’t for one second condone any form of cruelty towards animals but given a gun to my head, I would choose the life of a loved one over my beloved dog; I think it’s high time we take our heads from our arses and cop the fuck on. As much as torturing an animal sickens me, it repulses me as much, seeing so little care displayed for tortured people; seriously guys? Eleven thousand?

That’s it from me for now; try not to remain too disheartened, I will return just as soon as something else pisses me off to no end. Until then my friends, I bid you adieu.
